THE ‘CHRIST’ IN CHRISTMAS
When is your birthday? I know you know,
But have you thought of what makes that special date so?
You see, the year reflects a single event,
When a gift from heaven to us was sent.
A baby boy born… to a virgin… in a manager,
His name – JESUS CHRIST – the Messiah, our Saviour.
He was from a town that they said had no worth,
But the course of His life would change the face of the earth.
He turned water into wine, cast demons from the mind,
Healed the sick and gave sight to the blind.
He fed 5000 with two fish and some bread,
Walked on water and brought people back from the dead.
He befriended the lost, the lonely, and the poor,
He offended the system and gave religion ‘what for’.
Finally, He became the ultimate sacrifice,
Connecting us with God, by giving His life.
Three days later, He rose up and then,
That baby allowed us to all be born again.
But wait you say, this sounds too good to be true,
Or too far-fetched, I think – don’t you?
I mean a virgin birth? The Son of God through her?
Then miracles? A resurrection? Did that really occur?
Well, even secular scholars confirm Jesus was real,
That he had twelve disciples, and the power to heal.
And He became even more famous than Caesar,
And turned His worst persecutor, in to His greatest believer.
Okay, fair enough, but was He supernatural?
Was He God incarnate? Is that factual?
Hmm… how else does a lowly, carpenter’s son,
Become the thing that starts a new year one?
Even pagan wise men sought him, by a star sign in the sky.
Have you ever stopped to genuinely wonder why,
The years of each man, woman, boy and girl,
Are based upon when He came into the world.
Ok, so He probably wasn’t born in December,
But it’s the month we’ve chosen to stop and remember,
God’s gracious gift, full of love,
That the angels announced from the heavens above.
So don’t put an X in place of the Christ,
He is owed our respect for giving His life.
He was born so that people no more may die,
He was born to save both you and I.
So don’t forget to remember with reason,
The ‘Christ’ in Christmas, this Holi-day season.
